Sun, sea and rural retreats: The top staycation destinations to explore this summer

Temperatures in the UK have soared to more than 40 degrees this summer - couple this with disruption to international travel and there’s no better time to kick back, relax and enjoy the beauty spots on your doorstep.

It’s not too late to get away this sunny season and adult-only hotel group, Warner Leisure Hotels, has revealed which hotspots Brits are flocking to this summer, from glorious coastal getaways to idyllic rural retreats.

The Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is brimming with seaside towns and ancient historic attractions, making it the perfect location for a summer escape. Staycationers visiting this picture-perfect Isle can wonder at iconic landmarks, soak up the rays on one of the island’s many beaches – known for their golden sand and gorgeous views – or even visit the West Wight Alpacas.

Situated in a history-filled village on the West Wight, Norton Grange Coastal Village features a long board terrace promising stunning sunset views of the Solent. Guests can take part in as many or as little of the activities on offer as they please before washing down the with cocktails and three courses at Castaways restaurant and dancing the night away.

On the East of the Isle, Bembridge Coast Hotel is ideal base for touring the eastern shore. In the hotel, beautiful balcony rooms capture spectacular sunrise views over the Solent, and contemporary chalets are just a few steps from an idyllic sand and pebble beach. Spend your days partaking in coastal walks and exhilarating activities before treating yourself to live evening shows, including the hotel’s very own in-house band.

Those seeking a stay on the Isle can book a two-night break including breakfast dinner and activities at Norton Grange from £109 per person or at Bembridge Coast for £109 per person, based on two people sharing a room.

The Cotswolds

With picture-perfect villages, rolling hills and national treasures such as Blenheim Palace to explore, it’s no surprise that the Cotswolds is among the most sought-after spots for a summer getaway. Meander while taking in soaring views over England’s largest area of natural beauty, before quenching your thirst in one of the many thatched pubs or vintage tearooms.

On the edge of the Cotswolds, and within two hours of major cities like London and Birmingham, Heythrop Park Hotel opens this September to become Warner Leisure Hotel’s biggest and boldest hotel yet. Relish the best of the midday sun on the 18-Hole Championship Bainbridge Golf Course, or don your fluffy robe and treat yourself to a treatment or two in the spa, before delicious dinner and cocktails in one of the four on-site restaurants.

A two-night break based on two people sharing a room starts at £199 per person and includes breakfast, dinner, activities and entertainment.

 North Wales

North Wales is home to beautiful and dramatic landscapes, with a myriad of castles, beaches, forests and so much more for holidaymakers to discover. Whether it’s strolling along the coastline at the Isle of Anglesey, marvelling at the iconic Aber Falls, or exploring the many gems in the Italian style village of Portmerion, there’s plenty of reasons to staycation in this spectacular Welsh haven.

For a real royal experience, why not stay at Bodelwyddan Castle? This extraordinary Victorian Grade II listed building is right near the coast and encompasses all the amenities of a modern hotel. Think landscaped grounds, garden lodge suites and activities aplenty. If you prefer the quiet life, simply head to the spa for some R&R. Evenings bring delicious food and a host of entertainment in St. Davids Restaurant.

A two-night break in romantic castle surroundings with breakfast, dinner, activities and entertainment included starts from £149 per person based on two people sharing a room.

 Hayling Island

Hayling Island, with its stunning unspoilt coastline, is a seaside oasis that’s perfect for relaxing or exploring. The island is well known for its amusement parks as well as being steeped in rich military history. Its beaches promise tranquil seafront walks complete with panoramic views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight.

Located on the Islands west tip, Sinah Warren Hotel is surrounded by gorgeous gardens and offers sweeping sunny views across the water to Portsmouth. The outdoor pool is perfect for a refreshing dip on warmer days, and when evening rolls around, the holiday feeling continues with delightful food and first-class live shows.

Meanwhile, at Lakeside Coastal Village the on-site fishing lake is perfect for a summer stroll. If you’re seeking some R&R, the resort’s woodland lodges are the most secluded accommodation, nestled within the picturesque, landscaped gardens. Take part in archery or a Nordic walk by day and, once the sun goes down, expect dancing, live music and dining with friends.

A two-night island getaway complete with breakfast, dinner, activities and entertainment starts from £149 per person at Sinah Warren and £99 per person at Lakeside, based on two people sharing a room.
